Smart Ideas: Medicines Revisited

Facts About Yunnan Baiyao

Yunnan Baiyao isn’t a household name in this part of the world, but it’s one very popular herbal medicine in China and several other regions of the world. The term is literally translated as “white medicine of Yunnan,” referring to a Chinese province where everyone believes is the place of origin of the medicine. Yunnan Baiyao, when it was first discovered, was originally intended to be used for stopping any bleeding in the body caused by any kind of injury or ailment. But for the many decades of its existence, there have been numerous accounts of healing confessions brought by the same herbal medicine, with the Chinese having developed it as a treatment administered topically or internally.

On a historical note, the herbal medicine was thought to have been a very helpful piece for the Chinese men who fought against the Japanese during World War II, while the Vietcong army used the same against the Americans during the Vietnam War. Today, Yunnan Baiyao capsules are widely used in literally every corner of China mainly for trauma-related injuries and internal bleeding. Therefore, it is widely used even for minor cuts and wounds, internal injury and swelling, and even stomach ulcer. A testament of its effectiveness is the fact that it is even used to control or stop bleeding as a result of post-surgery.

While Yunnan Baiyao is mostly recognized for its ability to stop bleeding, Chinese medicine in general also credits it with other medical benefits, including the reduction of any swelling, improvement in blood circulation, pain alleviation, and elimination of toxins in the body.

One of the reasons why this miraculous herbal medicine has remained elusive to Western medicine is the fact that China has made it a priority to list it as one of the country’s state secrets. It only means that the exact ingredients, along with the specific manufacturing methods are hidden from everyone. But according to several rumors in China, the main ingredient and the one responsible for the ability of the medicine to effectively stop the bleeding is called Sanqi (Panax notoginseng). It is believed to be the catalyst of the anti-bleeding properties and the same can also reduce the possibility of hemorrhage. Even if there is really no official way of figuring out what’s inside of the capsules, it’s safe to say that the rest of the ingredients are natural.

Another remarkable thing about Yunnan Baiyao is that unlike other rare medicines found in exclusive areas in the world, it is not expensive. Due to the fact that it is already very popular in Asia and China, it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise if it conquers the Western world in the immediate future.
